We had a game down to the wire on Friday night with Centennial beating Antioch 9-7 on a late field goal.
Antioch scored its touchdown on a short fumble return for a TD. The offense never scored, but I think they were inside the 20 twice and came away with no points.
Centennial scored a touchdown with just under 2 minutes left in the game. The Cougars had all the momentum and decided to go for 2 and win it instead of going to overtime. We were pleased with that decision. Centennial's PAT attempt was no good, so they trailed by 1.
An onside kick turned into a scrum with a bunch of players from both teams trying to come up with the ball. Centennial recovered and drove down to kick a short field goal with about 14 seconds left. Not sure how close it was, but the kick was pretty low when it went over my head.
The excitement of the night - for everyone else - was seeing me on the ground. Late in the third quarter, the tight end ran a very short cross - 2 or 3 yards - and ran into me. I think I was OK with the first contact, but I think there was second contact from him to get around me and down I went.
On the next play, I stumbled over a defensive tackle's foot backing away from the ball prior to Antioch's punt.
If I had fallen again, I was ready to quit for a play or two to get my legs under me.
Got a light week this week. No games until Friday at White House. The rest of the crew have the TV game on Thursday at Tullahoma, but I'll be working stats at MTSU-Minnesota game.

Week 0 in the books
You usually don't open the season with a game that is so important, but we had one on Friday in Columbia.
Columbia hosted Lawrence County in a matchup of the top two teams in the district last year.
Friday's game was a good one with the hosts winning 21-11. Columbia had a stud at defensive tackle and a running back/linebacker that's not bad too. Lawrence County got worn down in the heat in the second half as it was just 7-3 Columbia at halftime.
Mr. Pond, our referee, got us in the right frame of mind at the hotel prior to the game. Columbia gets a room at a local hotel for the officials to dress before and after the game. Folks may make fun of the length of the pre-game, but it gets us ready for the game.

We had our last preseason meeting today in which we go this week's schedule. We'll get the rest of our first half schedule tomorrow or Wednesday.

Dragon Boat Festival
It's not football, but it's football related, if you can believe that.
For the last few years I have spent most of my Saturdays refereeing youth football. This year I am not doing this. So, because of that, I got to spend the day with Amy & Morgan. We went to Nashville to the Nashville Dragon Boat Festival at Riverfront Park.
We didn't stay long, it was way too hot, but we saw three or four races and met some folks from Taiwan who were manning one of the booths.
I am glad I wasn't working football today. There was a kid at the league I worked that had heat problems. Always hate working games for that age kids when it's so hot. They don't know when they have gotten too hot and we can't stop enough to let them drink water.
Got to get ready to deal with the heat though. The times I worked this week were really hot and we were in shorts. With varsity games beginning, we'll be in full gear - knickers - on Friday nights. We'll find our schedule on Monday.
It was a great day, and we got some much needed rain later in Shelbyville after we got home.

An introduction
An official friend of mine is writing a blog about his season on the gridiron this season, and that has inspired me to do the same.
I am starting my sixth season of officiating football in the Central Tennessee Football Officials Association. We have had our weekly rules/mechanics meetings since the middle of July and we're winding down to the season openers next Friday - Week 0.
With me being on vacation, I have had a busy week on the field. On Tuesday I worked a scrimmage at Shelbyville Central against Cannon County. The scrimmage was shortened because a Cannon County player suffered an injury and they had to call an ambulance to take him from the field.
On Thursday, I worked a middle school game at Community. It was a county rivalry with Community and Liberty. It was a sloppy game as the crew seemingly had about 100 flags during the game, though I think someone keeping stats told us afterwards that there were 24 penalties in the game.
On Friday I worked at jamboree at Shelbyville Central. It was pretty uneventful, though I got hit in the varsity quarters pretty hard. A runner cutback and a linebacker dove at him and hit me instead. Heard my ankle crackle, but the trainer looked at it after the game and pronounced it fit. Just ice and take Ibuprofin. So now I'm laying here with ice on my ankle.
Week 0 is this week. I've never worked a game during Week 0, but I figure that will change this year. We won't find out our schedule for this week until Monday's meeting.
